The word matrescence is the contraction of maternity and adolescence; it is a term that describes the process of becoming a mother. Covering everything from infertility and conception, to pregnancy, postpartum and parenting, Emma and Mackenzie discuss the daily ins and outs

It’s even often misdiagnosed as postnatal depression – which I find pretty alarming. Matrescence is the term used that describes the process a woman goes through as she transitions into becoming a mother. Originally coined by Dana Raphael PhD in 1973, (also coined the more commonly used term doula) it is now becoming a hot topic of discussion, and I personally believe, it’s the beginning of a social movement for change. When a baby is born, so is a mother -- but the natural (and sometimes unsteady) process of transition to motherhood is often silenced by shame or misdiagnosed as postpartum depression.
